Happy Labor Day! Please allow me to post here a published work by H.L. Neri., an inspiring poem about loving our work.
LOVE YOUR WORK
a poem by H.L. Neri
If you don’t like your work,
You’ll need three times the energy
To force yourself to work
To resist the force
And finally to work.
If you love your work,
Your desire to do it
Will be like a wind
To propel your ship
With much less fuel.
If you like your work,
You work no more
For work when you like it
Is work no longer
But sheer enjoyment.
If you enjoy your work,
You’ll work and work
Without counting the hours
And you’ll reap and enjoy
More earnings as well.

The first time I read this poem was at my father’s office in 1985. I was only in elementary then. I actually memorized it because I used to see it every day. I came to know its meaning and until now I go back to its messages and the inspiring motivation it contains. It is very helpful especially when I feel bored and fed-up at work sometimes.

My story is similar! I read this poem for the first time in my dad’s office sometime in the early 90s. He noticed I read it so he made a copy and put it up in my bedroom. Unfortunately I never memorised it but I never forgot about it. I saw something today on a friend’s blog that suddenly reminded me of it and I was hoping it would be easy to find online. It’s been a while since I read it and to be honest I don’t think it’s that great a poem but purely because of the place it has in my young life, it has such meaning, particularly between my dad and I, as we reference the third stanza/paragraph. Thanks to the original poster of the poem.
Does anybody know what the initials H L of the poet’s name stand for? I would like to read more about him/her if possible.
Thanks!
